HEALY, Elsie Miriam Nish

Peacefully, under the kind and attentive care of the staff at Ina Grafton Gage Nursing Home, on February 14, 2009. She was born on July 8, 1909 in Shawinigan, Quebec, and is predeceased by parents William and Martha Nish and husband, Ross (on September 16, 1961). Beloved mother of Ross (and his wife Judi), and Priscilla (and her husband John Varley). Elsie was an interested and interesting ''Gran'' to grandsons Ross, Christopher and Michael and granddaughters Margaret and Catherine, and leaves great-granddaughter Aiya and great-grandson Aidan.

Given her choice at the age of 19, Elsie chose a university education over a trip around the world at a time when few women attended college, attending MacDonald College at McGill University. Graduating in 1932, she joined the Toronto General Hospital as a dietician. She will be fondly remembered by her friends in the Stayner area as well as former students at Stayner Collegiate and Vocational Institute where she taught high school before retiring in 1975. Elsie played piano and sang in her church choir with joy, cooked with verve, gardened with pleasure, and maintained a house run by one or more cats and kittens.

At her request, cremation will take place and she will join husband Ross in Memorial Cemetery in Richmond, Quebec. Friends may call at the TRULL ''NORTH TORONTO'' FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE, 2704 Yonge St. (5 blocks south of Lawrence Ave.) on Tuesday from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, February 18th, 2009, at EGLINTON ST. GEORGE'S UNITED CHURCH (Duplex Ave. and Lytton Blvd.) at 10:30 am.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Eglinton St. George's United Church or All Saints (Kingsway) Anglican Church or the Canadian Red Cross.
