Title: Canon J.J. Willis (Obituary)

Canon J.J. Willis

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today for Rev. Canon John James Willis, of the Anglican Diocese of Montreal, who died on Sunday. He was 89.

As a pioneer of the Church here, Canon Willis would set a new church firmly on its foundations - then move on to repeat the same task elsewhere.

Canon Willis carried on this work all over the Island of Montreal - in such parishes as St. Aidan's in Ville Emard, St. Columba's in Notre Dame de Grace, St. Augustine's in Rosemount (now St. Luke's), St. Matthew's in the Mission of Snowdon, St. Hilda's, St. Cuthbert's, St. Margaret's, St. Paul's in Greenfield Park, and in St. Saviour's in Montreal South.

He also did the work of missionary, in another parish, that of St. Jude's - a church that was not new, but was encountering the difficulties of a changing area.

Following a serious illness, Canon Willis was appointed rector of the country parish of Vaudreuil in charge of the churches of St. James in Hudson and St. Mary in Como.

Canon Willis is survived by his wife, the former Helena Jane Cornell, a daughter, Jean (Mrs. K.M. Dewar) and a son, Matthew.

The funeral will be held at St. Phillip's Church, Montreal West, at 10 a.m. today.

Burial will be in Mount Royal Cemetery.

Rosedale Funeral Service is in charge of burial arrangements.
